1 Handbook of Reference Methods for Plant Analysis

Description

The Handbook of Reference Methods for Plant Analysis is an outstanding resource of plant analysis procedures, outlined in easy-to-follow steps and laboratory-ready for implementation. Plant laboratory preparation methods such as dry ashing and acid and microwave digestion are discussed in detail. Extraction techniques for analysis of readily soluble elements (petiole analysis) and quick test kits for field testing are also presented. This handbook consolidates proven, time tested methods in one convenient source. Plant scientists in production agriculture, forestry, horticulture, environmental sciences, and other related disciplines will find the Handbook a standard laboratory reference.

The Handbook was written for the Soil and Plant Analysis Council, Inc., of which the editor is a board member. The council aims to promote uniform soil test and plant analysis methods, use, interpretation, and terminology; and to stimulate research on the calibration and use of soil testing and plant analysis. This reference will help readers reach these important goals in their own research.

0 Wetland Plants: Biology and Ecology

Description

A detailed account of the biology and ecology of vascular wetland plants and their applications in wetland plant science, Wetland Plants: Biology and Ecology presents a synthesis of wetland plant studies and reviews from biology, physiology, evolution, genetics, community and population ecology, environmental science, and engineering. It provides a thorough discussion of the range of wetland plants adaptations to conditions such as life in water or saturated soils, high salt or high sulfur, as well as low light and low carbon dioxide levels.

The authors include the latest research on the development of plant communities in newly restored or created wetlands and on the use of wetland plants as indicators of ecological integrity and of wetland boundaries. Over 140 figures, including over 70 original photographs, allow you to visualize the concepts, 40 tables give you easy access to definitions and data, and international examples provide you with a broad base of information.

The growing consensus in wetlands literature and research suggests that methods are needed to assess the ecological health or integrity of wetlands, to set goals for wetland restoration, and to track the status and trends of wetlands. Wetland plants are emerging as important indicators, and becoming an important part of this research. Wetland Plants: Biology and Ecology contains up-to-date information on this increasingly important area in wetlands technology.

Editorial Reviews

An admirable work on a broad subject, with enough depth to be useful to academics as well as practitioners. The extensive literature citations will help those who need greater detail. The writing style is lucid, and the many tables, illustrations, and black-and-white photographs are useful and well reproduced.

0 Wild Plants Of The Sierra Nevada

Description

The first comprehensive look at the many uses, from historical to pharmacological, of vascular plants found in the Sierra Nevada. The Sierra Nevada of California and Nevada is the longest continuous mountain range in the United States. Covering about 20 percent of California’s land base and part of western Nevada, it offers an exceptional variety of topographic relief and environmental conditions that allow for a high diversity of plant species, many of them endemic to the range. The Sierra contains over 50 percent of California’s total flora, approximately 405 plant taxa endemic to the Sierra, and 218 taxa considered rare.
Wild Plants of the Sierra Nevada inventories the flora of the entire range, including comprehensive descriptions of the plants; their traditional uses as food, medicine, or for making tools and other utensils; and their habitat; plus "quick keys" to help identify similar species. The authors’ introduction describes the natural history and ecology of Sierra Nevada plants in terms of plant communities and life zones, addressing the impact of such variables as climate, elevation, soil, and precipitation. They also outline the basic principles of ethnobotany, the role of plants in nutrition and human medicine, the classification of plants, and methods of collecting plant specimens and protecting rare species. The plant descriptions are accompanied by line drawings of each major species, and the book includes a table of Sierra Nevada habitats and their associated plants, along with a list of threatened, endangered, and sensitive plant species found in the range. Wild Plants of the Sierra Nevada is an essential guide for botanists, outdoors aficionados, and anyone interested in the intricate connections between plants, their environment, and our human species.

0 World Spice Plants: Economic Usage, Botany, Taxonomy

Book Description

Despite their long tradition spices are subject to international modern scientific research. This has made it necessary to disseminate knowledge to a large audience of interest. The book addresses this need by informing the reader about the complex worldwide use of spice plants.

The many spice and aromatic plants are arranged in alphabetical order of their botanical relevance. It includes all species which have been cultivated for the above purposes. It also covers species whose usage has long ceased or which are used only rarely or have become wild. In this respect the author has aimed at comprehensiveness. In total over 1400 plants have been collated.

The very extensive register of literature has been designed to facilitate intensive study of a specific plant or spice. Works both on botany and agriculture, and on chemistry, pharmacodynamics and usage have been considered.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews:
"This encyclopedic guidebook covers over 1,400 spice plants from the world over, including economically important spice plants and aromatic plants. The lay-out of the book is simple and easy-to-read. … The extensive reference section is one of the more useful features. … The authors also include instructive color photographs of many of the plants growing in the field and in the form in which they are used … . Overall, this is an instructive and useful reference book for school libraries and food science laboratories." (Marissa Oppel, SIDA, Vol. 22 (2), 2006)

From the Back Cover

This book addresses the need to disseminate scientific knowledge of the complex world of spice plants to a wide audience of interest. It considers the economic usage of spices in several forms, as an ingredient for adding flavor, as a pot herb and as an additive for condiments such as ketchup, and mustard. Designed as a work of reference, it offers an easy to use systematic listing of international nomenclature.

The book is aimed primarily at aroma experts in both science and industry, but also botanists, pharmacists, food chemists and dieticians will take inspiration from the book, which is also illustrated by around 100 full color photographs.

- Comprehensive listing of over 1400 plants

- Plant nomenclature from around the world

- Arranged alphabetically for ease of reference

- Exhaustive register of relevant literature for further reading
