Description: A stemless, small, rhizomatous herb, up to 20 cm tall. Rhizome small, deep purple within. Leaves 1-several, 8-16 cm long, obovate to elliptic, slightly unequal sided, acute or acuminate, base, subcordate, peliole short, channeled. Flowers few in a sessile central tuft; corolla white; lip ovate-cuneate, emerginate, white with purple blotch at the middle.

Chemical Constituents: The chemical constituents from Kaempferia parviflora are consisting of 5,7-dimethoxyflavone, 5-hydroxy-3,7,4′-trimethoxyflavone and 5-hydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyflavone and almost major flavones compounds.
Ethnopharmacology:
- Black Ginger or Krachai Dam in Thai (Kaempferia parviflora) is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. Since ancient time, it has traditionally been used as a health promoting, stimulating and vitalizing agent.

Description: Deciduous shrub (evergreen in warm areas), broad, open, usually with several trunks, to 3-6 ft (0.9-1.8 m) tall, twice that in the southern part of its range.  Leaves simple, opposite or in whorls of 3, narrowly ovate to ovate-oblong, 9-11 cm long, 3-4.5 cm wide, margin entire, often short-ciliate, tip pointed, base rounded, upper surface glossy dark green, paler below; petiole 0.5-1 cm long; leaves emerge late in spring.  Flowers in 3-cm globular, white clusters, fragrant, each flower small, about 4 mm wide; attract butterflies.  Fruit in globose heads, about 3 cm wide, yellowish to red.
Flowering Season: June to September.
Elevation: 1,000 to 5,000 feet; near sea-level to 3,000 feet in California.
Habitat Preferences: Wet soil along streams, sometimes in dry washes with periodic rainfall; lake or stream edges in California.
Recorded Range: Common Buttonbush is found mostly east of the Mississippi River and eastern Canada. It is also native to Arizona, California and Texas, and northwest and central Mexico.
Chemical Composition: Analysis has shown the bark to contain starch, sugar, gum, fatty matter, several resins, tannin, a saponin-like body, and an amorphous, bitter constituent readily soluble in both water and alcohol. A crystalline, fluorescent body has been obtained by precipitation with acetate and subacetate of lead. These acicular crystals are dissolved by alcohol, ether, and water (Hattan, Amer. Jour. Pharm., Vol. XLV).
Mr. Edo Claasen has obtained three bodies from the bark, cephalanthin, cephaletin, and cephalin. The latter occurs as warty crystals, and is thought to be a glucosid, splitting up into glucose and cephaletin on evaporating the solution. Cephalin is in yellowish-white needles, strongly-refracting, acid in reaction, and otherwise tasteless. It is insoluble in petroleum ether, very sparingly soluble in cold water, more soluble in hot water, and dissolving with greater ease in alcohol, ether, benzol, chloroform, and acetic acid. This body is strongly fluorescent in aqueous, alcoholic, and alkaline solutions, all well diluted. Even so minute a trace as 1 part in 2,000,000 of water exhibits this property, and if an alkali be added the blue coloration will be noticeable in a dilution of 1 to 20,000,000. The concentrated alkaline solution has a lemon-yellow color (Proc. A. P. A., 1892).
Action, Medical Uses, and Dosage: Tonic, febrifuge, aperient, and diuretic. The bark has been used with much success in intermittent and remittent fevers; and the inner bark of the root forms an agreeable bitter, which is often employed in coughs, and as a diuretic in gravel. The plant deserves further investigation. Tincture, 10 to 30 drops; infusion, flss to fli.
Cephalanthin is, according to Kobert (1892), distinctly poisonous to both cold and warm-blooded animals, producing emesis, spasms, and paralysis. It destroys the blood corpuscles, converting them into methaemoglobin and oxyhaemoglobin.
Comments: Cephalanthus occidentalis is possibly poisonous to livestock as it contains glucosides, including cephalanthine. It is not very palatable to livestock although native bees are attracted to the showy tubular flowers. Cephalanthus occidentalis is a caterpillar host for 2 moths; Hydrangea sphinx, Darapsa versicolor and Titan sphinx Aellopos titan.
Cephalanthus occidentalis has been used for a variety of purposes by North American indigenous peoples.

Related Species: Sarcocephalus esculentus, Afzelius. Senegambia and Sierra Leone furnish this plant, which is known in its habitat as the doundake. The bark, under the names Quinquina Africaine and Kina du Rio Nunez, is employed by the negroes as a febrifuge. More properly it is an astringent tonic, and as such is useful in the anemic state following typhoids, and as a remedy for loss of appetite, and for atonic dyspepsia. No alkaloid is present, according to Heckel and Schlagdenhauffen, but its virtues seem to depend upon three resinous principles—an orange-yellow bitter soluble in water, alcohol, and solution of potassa; a pale-yellow body insoluble in water, but soluble in potassa solution; and the third insoluble in alcohol and water, but dissolving in the potassa solution.

The latex is used externally in the treatment of infected wounds, ulcers, skin infections and scabies. In Indonesia one of its local names is 'yodium' ('iodine'), which reflects the popular use as a wound-healing remedy. In Indo-China, dried roots are given as a decoction against indigestion and colic; they are also prescribed as a tonic to treat orchitis and oedemas. The leaves are used as a purgative, and in the treatment of dysentery and scabies. Jatropha multifida is widely grown, often in hedges, for its ornamental foliage and flowers. The tuberous roots can be eaten after roasting. The plant may also be used as a fish poison.

Description:
Zingiber cassumunar is a member of the Zingiberaceae family. It is an erect herb with subterranean stem called rhizome. The rhizome is jointed but much larger than Zingiber officinale, when fresh it is of deep yellow colour possessing a strong camphoraceous smell, warm, spicy and bitterish taste. The pseudo stem is made up of leave sheaths. The leaflets are bifarious, approximate, sessile on their sheaths, linear-lanceolate, deep green above; villous and paler underneath. They measure between 30-60 cm long and 7.5 cm wide. The sheaths are clothed with pungent hairs on the outside. The scapes are radical measures from 15-30 cm long, invested in several oblong, downy sheaths. The spikes are oblong in shape, strobiliform, compact, sharp-pointed, closely imbricated with numerous obovate, acuminate, greenish brown, villous bractes. The flowers are solitary, large, of pale, uniform sulphur colour. The calyx are double with smooth exterior, spathiform, tri-dentate, inserted round the base of the germ, which, as well as the inner, or proper perianth, it entirely envelopes. Inner or proper perianth, superior, one-leaved, somewhat gibbous, membraneous, three-toothed on the outside divided nearly half way down. The corola tube slender, as long as the scale of the spikel upper division of the exterior border boat-shaped, projecting over the stamen; under, two narrower and reflexed under the lip. The 3-lobed lip with lateral lobes obliquely obovate, erect; middle lobe nearly round, with apex, emarginate, and the border slightly curled. Another ending in a long subulate recurved beak. [1]

Traditional Used:
The rhizome of Z. cassumunar is considered to be a carminative, stimulant and antispasmodic and is made used of in the treatment of digestive problems like diarrhoea, stomachache, flatulance and constipation. [1] In Indonesia the rhizome is chewed together with clove and the residue is rubbed over the abdomen to relieve colics in children. In Malaysia a decoction of the rhizome with pepper given orally is used instead to treat stomachache. Plain decoction of the rhizome or an infusion of it is given for constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence and as a vermifuge. [2]
To treat hepatitis or jaundice the Indonesians use grated rhizome juice mixed with water and honey. This is given twice a day.
Decoction or infusion of the rhizome of is also used to treat asthma and cough.
Z. cassumunar is one of the components of a compound medicine given to women immediately after delivery. For purposes of cleansing the uterus the rhizome is pounded together with the rhizome of Acorus calamus, the juice is squeezed and mixed with vinegar. Another method of utilizing it in the immediate postpartum period is to use it as a poultice to allow rapid involution of the uterus. For post partum fever the pounded rhizome is used as a compress over the whole body.
The genus Zingiber is well known for their anti-inflammatory property. Z. cassumunar is also used to treat all forms of inflammatory conditions. It is used to treat infective inflammatory processes like non-healing ulcers, abscesses and gonorrhoea. For non-healing ulcers the pounded rhizome is applied over the ulcer and secured with a bandage. Haematoma is treated by immersing the pounded rhizome in arrack and this is compressed over the lesion.
To help reduce weight the rhizome is mixed with 7 leaves of Guazuma ulmifolia and the decoction is given orally while still warm. Special for women the rhizome is boiled together with the leaves of Guazuma tomentosa and is taken daily for one month.
For improving visual acuity a decoction of the rhizome of Z. cassumunar, Curcuma domestica together with 13 Nigella sativa seeds is given orally. Infusion of the rhizome is also an antidote and is also used to treat fever. The juice from grated rhizome is also given for worm infestation, flatulance and fretfulness of children. [3]
Pharmacology:
Anti-inflammatory activity:
As cited above Z. cassumunar has been used as an anti-inflammatory drug in traditional practices all over the world. Investigators had over the years studied this activity in the rhizome and had isolated a number of compounds that had shown this activity. Three compounds isolated from the n-hexane-soluble fraction of methanol extract i.e. (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl) but-1-ene, (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)butadiene and zerumbone. One compound showed the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity of the plant and that is (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)but-1-ene. [4] Further studies done on (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)but-1-ene reported similar effects and they ilicited the mechanism of action as being due to inhibition of the CO and LO pathway; more so with the LO pathway. [5] In a more recent study on the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity another pheylbutanoid isolated showed COX-2 inhibitory activity. The compound is (E)-4-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-O-beta-D-glycopyranoside. [6]
Antimicrobial activity
Z. cassumunar rhizome is used in the treatment of infective lesion of the skin including furunculosis and abscesses. Studies on the antimicrobial activity of the essential oil on a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, dermatophytes and yeasts reported that dermatophytes were the most susceptible organism followed by yeasts and finally bacteria. [7]
Anti-allergic activity
In Thailand the rhizome of Z. cassumunar is used to treat various allergic-related diseases. Studies on the anti-allergic activity of some members of the Zingiberacea anf found that amongst those plants tested, the volatile oil of Z. cassumunar had amongst the highest anti-allergic activity. [8]
Anti-oxidant activity
Two groups of compounds were found to be responsible for anti-oxidant activity of Z. cassumunar. The yellow colour of the rhizome is attributed to the presence of curcuminoids in the substance. New curcuminoids isolated showed significant anti-oxidant activity Which are called Cassumunin and Cassumunin A and B possess a potent protective action against oxidative stress. [9] Isolation of new phenylbutanoids was discovered which showed inhibitory effects to nitric acid production in mouse peritoneal macrophages. Amongst those with significant inhibitory effects are phlain III (IC50=24 microM), (E)-1-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)buta-1,3-diene (69 microM), (E)-1-(2,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)buta-1,3-diene (83 microM), and cassumunaquinone 1 (47 microM). [10]
Anticancer activity
In a screening for anti-tumour promoter activity in Malaysian ginger, rhizome extracts of these plants including Z. cassumunar contain natural non-toxic compounds that inhibit the EBV activation. [11] A phenylbutanoid dimer (+/-)-trans-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-[(E)-3,4-dimethoxystyryl] cyclohex-1-ene was reported to be able to inhibit proliferation of various human cancer cells. This is further observed on anti-proliferative effects on A549 human lung cancer cells and demonstrated that it arrested cell cycle progression at the G0/G1 phase. Further studies of the effects of phenylbutanoids from Z. cassumunar on P-glycoprotein activity and reported that (+/-)-trans-3-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-4-[(E)-3,4-dimethoxystyryl] cyclohex-1-ene has significant ihibitory effects on P-gp inhibitory activity making it a potential chemo-sensitizing agent that could reverse the P-gp-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR) in human cancer chemotherapy. [12]

Uses
Ceiba pentandra has two main uses, being an important source of fibre and of timber. Historically it has been most important as a source of kapok fibre, the floss derived from the inner fruit wall. Kapok fibre is used for stuffing cushions, pillows and mattresses, and for insulation, absorbent material and tinder. The use of kapok fibre declined in the late 20th century after the introduction of synthetic substitutes. However, there is a renewed interest in the potential of kapok, using new processing techniques, especially in textile applications. The fibre may also have potential as a biodegradable alternative to synthetic oil-sorbent materials, due to its hydrophobic-oleophilic properties.
Currently, the main use of Ceiba pentandra is as a source of timber. The wood (trade names: ‘fuma’, ‘ceiba’) is mostly used in plywood manufacturing, but also for making boxes and crates, and for lightweight joinery. Traditionally, entire trunks are hollowed out as dugout canoes, and the wood is used for lightweight furniture, utensils, containers, musical instruments, mortars, carvings and similar items. It is suitable for insulation, wooden sandals, heels, rafts, floats, lifeboats, models, insulation and particle board. The buttresses are made into doors, table tops, plates and trays.
The wood is suitable for papermaking. Although it has been recorded to be used as fuelwood in DR Congo, it is not considered very suitable as such, because it only smoulders. The wood can be used for fumigating huts or clothes. Wood ash is used as kitchen salt and for soap making. The bark is used for making hut walls and doors and yields a gum and a reddish brown dye. The leaves and shoots are fodder for goats, sheep and cattle. The leaves, flowers and young fruits are eaten cooked into sauces. The flowers are visited by bees, producing an amber-coloured honey with a characteristic taste. Ash from the fruits is locally made into snuff.
A use that has attracted commercial interest is as a source of seed oil, which has been used in soap, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. The oil can also be used for illumination, paint manufacturing and lubrication. It has been used for culinary purposes, but this is not advisable for health reasons. The seed cake is good as feed or as fertilizer. The seeds are eaten roasted or they are pounded and ground into meal or cooked in soup. They are, however, said to upset the digestion.
Ceiba pentandra finds wide application in African traditional medicine. The root forms part of preparations to treat leprosy. Pulverized roots and root decoctions are taken against diarrhoea and dysentery. Root decoctions are oxytocic. Macerations of the root bark are drunk against dysmenorrhoea and hypertension. The root and stem barks are credited with emetic and antispasmodic properties. Stem bark decoctions are used in mouth washes for treating toothache and mouth problems, and are taken to treat stomach problems, diarrhoea, hernia, gonorrhoea, heart trouble, oedema, fever, asthma and rickets; they are also applied on swollen fingers, wounds, sores, furuncles and leprous macules. Bark extracts are considered emetic; they are drunk or applied as an enema. Macerations of the bark are a cure for heart trouble and hypertension, and are credited with stimulant and anthelminthic properties. The powdered bark is applied on wounds. Gum from the bark is an astringent and is used to treat diarrhoea and as an abortifacient. The leaves are credited with emollient and sedative properties. They are used against scabies, diarrhoea, fatigue and lumbago, and as an alterative, laxative and abortifacient. Young leaves are warmed and mixed with palm oil to be eaten against heart problems. Pounded leaves are applied as a dressing on sores, tumours, abscesses and whitlows. Leaf sap is applied on skin infections, and drunk to treat mental illness. Leaf macerations are drunk or used in baths against general fatigue, stiffness of the limbs, headache and bleeding of pregnant women. Leaf preparations are used as an eye-bath to remove foreign bodies from the eye. A decoction of the leaves is applied to treat conjunctivitis and wounds in the eye, and is used for bathing and massage to treat fever. In veterinary medicine a decoction of the leaves is given to treat trypanosomiasis. The flowers are taken to treat constipation, and flowers and fruits are credited with emollient properties. The powdered fruit is taken with water against intestinal parasites and stomach-ache. Kapok fibre is used for cleaning wounds. The seed oil is rubbed in for treatment of rheumatism and applied to heal wounds.
Ceiba pentandra is planted as a wayside and shade tree. The tree is sometimes left by farmers after clearing the forest for agricultural land, to serve as a shade tree for cultivation of crops such as coffee and tea. It is increasingly planted as an ornamental in subtropical areas. The kapok tree has sacred significance for local peoples in many parts of the world, including tropical Africa, where it often serves as a tree under which meetings are held.

Lateral corolla lobes ovate, 16–20 × 6–8 mm, semi-translucent yellow with red tinge at apex, apex slightly concave, glabrous. Labellum broadly spathulate, bilobed at apex, 21–23 mm long, 18–21 mm broad at apex, c. 5 mm broad at base, lobes more or less rounded, split c. 7–8 mm, yellow with red-orange central patch, with short glandular hair. Lateral staminodes obovate, 20–24 × 7–10 mm, yellow, covered with glandular hairs. Stamen 7 mm long, filament 2.5–3 mm long, pinkish at base, light yellow towards apex, glabrous, anther 5 mm long, anther thecae dehiscing along their entire length, connective tissue deep yellow, covered with glandular hairs, anther crest c. 1 mm long. Epigynous glands two, 4–6mm, cream white sometimes with slight pink tinge at base, ochraceous towards apex, sometimes connate. Ovary trilocular with axile placentation, 2–3 mm long, 2 mm in diam., cream white with slight pink tinge at apex, densely hairy. Style white, glabrous, stigma white, apex ciliate, quadrangular with transverse ciliate ostiole. Fruits unknown.
Habitat and phenology: This species occurs in evergreen broad-leaved mixed forest, on limestone, at elevations about 100–200 m. It flowers in March to April.
