The native range of this species is Mexico to Central America. It is a shrub or tree and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as a poison and a medicine, has environmental uses and for food.

Use:

Chaya buds and leaves are used as a laxative, diuretic, circulatory stimulant, digestive aid, lactation stimulant, and to harden nails and darken hair.
